I have been fascinated by doors all my life. It is often said that walls could tell many stories... but to me,doors are more revealing... who has passed through them, when in the history of time, and for what purpose? An old door is where lives have encountered those defining times when decisions need to be made that will trascend our daily lives.
Here are a few doors, as well as other structures that have said something to me at some time or another. My doors are often the most realistic aspect of my work. I think you'll find them interesting both in their varied textures, colors and shapes, and in their hidden representation of untold human activity...
I rarely represent the human figure as a portrait, with recognizable features of this or that person... in fact, often it is not possible to even ascertain a gender! But I strive to evoke strong feelings from the viewer by presenting images that might appear calm in the exterior, but often denote an interanl struggle. Please explore more....
Well, some paintings escape classification, and I happen to do a lot of those. Like this one! It is called "Testosterone bump" and it's explanation is clear to scientists working on aging (not many of those here!). This particular one has been called "nerdy" due to its relation to my line of work, but others in this collection are much more accessible.... Feel free to explore!
Nature painting is the bread and butter of representational painters. Sometimes - especially the watercolors - my landscapes are like that... representational. But other times I like to stylize the images, and by using strong color contrasts I aim at making the landscapes a little more surreal and enchanted, with a little more poetry and subtle irrealism. I hope you will enjoy these selected pieces...
Well, this is different! In other sections I have not separated the works by technique.... but in trying to compile much of what I've done I was genuinely surprised to discover how many watercolors I have done! They came as a surprise to me, and I sincerely hope you'll find them enjoyable!
This is a series... I love coffee and what better way to combine two things that I love than by making sketches of the people sitting at Starbucks? These are very rough because the people are not posing (in fact, they are usually unaware of being drawn), so I only have 2-5 minutes, sometimes up to 10 minutes to render them. They are anonymous and because of that, the drawings are not named either.
